Respect, Connection, and the Modern Love Gap

What I’ve Learned from Reading for Thousands of Men and Women About Why Relationships Feel So Misaligned Today

After years of reading tarot for clients around the world, one pattern has shown up again and again. Men and women, or those who identify with masculine and feminine energy, are reaching for each other but missing each other entirely.

It’s not that people don’t want love. They do. Deeply. But what they believe love should look like and what they give in order to receive it are rarely aligned. I’ve sat across from hundreds of clients, and I can tell you with certainty that the disconnect isn’t about who texts first, who pays the bill, or even who’s more emotional. It’s about how both masculine and feminine energies have been conditioned to value the self over connection.

The Masculine: Respect as Control

My masculine-identifying clients often begin their sessions with the same concern. They want respect. They crave it. They feel unseen, unheard, and unappreciated by their partner, usually a feminine-identifying woman.

But when I look deeper into their stories, what I often find is this. They aren’t acting respectfully toward their partner. They demand respect while offering control. They want her to submit, not to stand beside them. They expect her to hold space for their flaws, soothe their anger, carry the emotional weight of the relationship, and still speak to them softly.

What they call respect is often about power, not partnership.

Psychological research supports this observation. Studies show that men’s satisfaction in relationships is closely linked to feeling respected, but how that respect is defined changes everything. A study in Social Sciences found that respect comes in two forms: status-based (admiration, hierarchy) and inclusion-based (acceptance, equality). Men who chase status-based respect often struggle with control, while those who experience inclusion-based respect show higher commitment and happiness.

Wanting respect is natural, but respect rooted in control is fear wearing a mask.

The Feminine: Mistaking Attention for Connection

Then there are my feminine-identifying clients. Their stories almost always begin with distance.

“He’s withdrawn.”

“He doesn’t open up.”

“He only touches me when he wants sex.”

They crave emotional connection but often mistake physical attention for intimacy. Compliments, flirtation, and sexual advances can feel like love at first, but they rarely fill the deeper void.

A 2021 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that women often regulate emotions in relationships to keep peace, sometimes silencing themselves to protect the bond. This can lead to a pattern of accepting surface-level affection instead of demanding emotional honesty.

Objectification creates a false sense of connection. The body becomes a bridge to love when the heart is kept at a distance.

The Misalignment: The “I” Generation of Love

When you step back, the pattern becomes clear.

Masculine energy wants to be respected but forgets to be respectful.

Feminine energy wants to be emotionally met but settles for being desired.

Both are trapped in “I” and “me” instead of “we.”

The masculine says, “I need to be respected.”

The feminine says, “I need to feel connected.”

Both are speaking from self-protection instead of shared creation.

Our culture teaches men to lead without vulnerability and women to love without boundaries. Emotional intimacy has become a performance instead of a practice. Even well-meaning people fall into this loop because collective conditioning still tells us that a woman’s softness should serve a man’s comfort, and a man’s dominance should prove his worth.

What the Research Says About Control and Emotional Avoidance

Psychologists have found that controlling behavior often stems from insecure attachment and emotional avoidance. A 2024 study published in the Journal of Family Violence found that people with anxious or avoidant attachment styles are more likely to use controlling behaviours with their partners.

Many who fear rejection try to control their environment, including their partner’s emotions or choices. It’s not always conscious, but it breaks down trust and connection.

At the same time, emotional avoidance, especially among men raised to hide vulnerability, creates distance that partners interpret as rejection. The feminine senses the disconnection immediately, while the masculine sees her response as “too emotional” or “demanding.” The space between them widens, even though both are silently craving closeness.

What We’re Really Searching For

At the core, both energies are searching for the same thing: safety.

Men want to feel safe in their identity, respected and supported.

Women want to feel safe in their emotions, seen and understood.

But true safety doesn’t come from control or performance. It comes from honesty, accountability, and emotional literacy.

When we stop asking how to win in love and start asking how to grow in love, everything changes. Respect stops feeling like obedience. Desire stops feeling like validation. Connection becomes what it was always meant to be, a sacred meeting of two whole people who stay curious about each other.

How Tarot Can Help You Reconnect

Tarot is not just about prediction. It’s about reflection. When you pull cards about your relationship, you’re being shown the energy you’re contributing, the story you’re repeating, and the truth you may be avoiding.

A reading focused on love and connection can reveal where control, fear, or avoidance are blocking intimacy. It can guide you toward healthier communication, deeper empathy, and balance between giving and receiving.

When clients come to me asking how to reconnect with their partner, we don’t just read about the other person. We explore their own energy, where they are not being open, where they are reacting instead of responding, and where they can reclaim power without dominance.

Tarot reminds us that love is not something we chase; it’s something we cultivate through awareness, honesty, and emotional alignment.
